Benefits of Chiropractic during Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Chiropractic during pregnancy is effective, drug free and most importantly, safe, for the mom and her baby.

During pregnancy, there are several physical changes that occur. The following changes could result in a misaligned spine or joint, resulting in back pain  during pregnancy (either low-back or mid-back), hip pain, sciatica, pelvic pain and other joint pain:

  • Protruding abdomen and increased back curve
  • Pelvic changes
  • Postural adaptations

Restoring pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth which can result in an easier and safer delivery for both the mother and baby.

Webster Chiropractic technique for Pregnancy

Dr. Maya was certified in Webster technique in 2004 in Toronto, ON and is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the ICPA, discovered this technique as a safe means to restore proper pelvic balance and function for pregnant women. During pregnancy, tense muscles and ligaments in the pelvic region can cause restriction on the uterus which can prevent the baby from assuming the best possible position for birth. Webster is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment, that is used only during pregnancy, that helps to correct pelvic misalignments which then reduces tension in the muscles and ligaments which allows the baby to get in the best position for birth. This chiropractic technique has been successfully used in women whose babies present breech, transverse and posterior.

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported in the July/August 2002 issue an 82% success rate of babies turning vertex when doctors of chiropractic used the Webster Technique. Further, the results from the study suggest that it may be beneficial to perform the Webster Technique as soon as the 8th month of pregnancy when a woman has a breech presentation.

Can I lie on my stomach during a chiropractic adjustment?

Dr. Maya uses specially designed pillows that allow the expectant mother to lay on her stomach, safely and comfortably during her chiropractic adjustment. They are two sizes in order to change with the progression of the pregnancy.

Many of the mothers wish they could take the pillows home because they are so comfortable!

If a woman is unable to lie on her stomach for her adjustments, they can be performed while the patient is lying on her side.

Benefits of Chiropractic Post Pregnancy

As your body's supply of relaxin gets reduced, your bones and ligaments start to return back to their original position.  Chiropractic helps this process, making sure that everything is aligned.  Chiropractic is a very important part of the post partum process and is especially so if you've had a difficult pregnancy or a tramatic birth process.

Chiropractic also helps your body deal with the added stresses that occur as you hold and take care of your baby.
