Classical Homeopathic Medicine in Toronto

Our Homeopaths Joy Burlton and Theresa Johnson are our two Classical Homeopaths at the clinic. They provide a professional and supportive environment for their patients. Their aim is to work closely with you to help you regain optimum health, and to promote a continuing and lasting improvement in your strength, vitality and sense of well-being.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is an ancient and natural system of medicinal healing. It is based upon two simple principles: ‘like cures like’ and the ‘minimum dose’.

Known as the Law of Similars, this first principle was first recorded by the Greek physician Hippocrates (the ‘father of modern medicine’), in the fifth Century BC, who wrote that there are two methods of healing: by contraries and by similars. Conventional medicine uses the principal of contraries; that is they use, for example, laxatives for constipation, cooling agents for fevers etc. Homeopathy, on the other hand, recognizes that symptoms of illness are part of the body’s attempt to correct an underlying imbalance in the whole person; hence they use medicines/remedies that work with the body’s own healing powers rather than against them. For example, Allium cepa, a remedy made from an onion, and which we all know makes our eyes water, is a common remedy for the tears and runny noses associated with respiratory allergies, including hay fever. Another good example is Coffea (coffee), which is recommended for insomnia. Homeopathic medicines powerfully boost the body’s own self-healing ability, correcting the imbalance and allowing symptoms to disappear.

The second principle, ‘the minimum dose’ means that only enough medicine is administered to stimulate the body’s own healing response , which then carries on, driven by its own internal healing mission. Homeopathic medicines are gentle, subtle and powerful; they are non-addictive, not tested on animals and do not produce the side effects that so often accompany conventional treatment.

Who and What Can Be Treated?

Homeopathy is safe and effective for everyone including the elderly, babies, children and expectant mothers. Homeopathy can be used in conjunction with other treatment modalities and will not interact harmfully with medication.

Homeopathy is particularly effective in a range of complaints including:

•    Anxiety, depression and stress-related illness
•    ADHD/ADD
•    Autism/ASD
•    Acne, eczema and psoriasis
•    Hormonal disorders, including PMS and menopause
•    Hay fever and allergies
•    Arthritis, repetitive strain and sports injuries
•    IBS, migraine and insomnia
•    Childhood complaints* from chronic ear infections to sleeping or behavioral problems.

*Children usually respond well to homeopathic treatment, and it also helps to support the development of a strong, healthy immune system.

Pregnancy and Childbirth

Homeopathy is particularly suitable at this time when many women have concerns over the possible side effects of conventional medicines. There are many emotional, physical and hormonal changes which take place during pregnancy. Homeopathy can help with minor complaints such as morning sickness, heartburn, thrush and varicose veins, as well as more serious health problems. Homeopathy works with your body’s defenses to stimulate vitality, which benefits the baby too.

Mental and Emotional Illness

Both Joy and Theresa have a special interest in treating mental and emotional illnesses, such as anxiety and depression in adults and children. For patients who want to reduce or come off medication(s), we can help you to achieve this.---
